Abstract

The purpose of technology is to facilitate various jobs that humans do. An example of technological advances is CNC machines. The CNC machine is controlled by a computer using the numeric language (command data with a code of numbers, letters, and symbols which are often called G-code) following the ISO 6983 standard[1]. CNC machine is a machine tool used in the machining process. The machining process is a production process using machine tools with relative motion between the cutting tool and workpiece to form the geometry specifications of a product. The machining process can use metal or wood materials as workpieces. Wood has inhomogeneous properties like metal which causes the characteristic of the cutting process to be different from metal. Due to this inhomogeneous, the rate of wear in HSS (high-speed steel) cutting tools with wooden workpieces is studied. The tools use a three-axis CNC router machine and an HSS material cutting tool with a teak wood workpiece. Several variables are varied in this study, such as spindle speeds of 12000,17000, and 22000 rpm, and there are variations in feed rate of 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 mm/flute. Cutting the workpiece 210 mm long with a cutting depth of 1.5 mm is done by recording the cutting time and seeing the length of wear on the cutting tool using a zoom stereo microscope. The procedure is repeated until it reaches a cutting time of 6 minutes. The data from the study were processed using the one-way ANOVA method to see the effect of spindle speed and feed rate on the wear rate. The result of the research was that the highest wear rate occurred at a variation in spindle speed of 22000 rpm and feed rate of 0,04 mm/flute, which has a value of 0,1017 µm/second. This study concludes that the spindle speed and feed rate affect the wear rate of the HSS cutting tool on a teak wood workpiece using a three-axis CNC router machine.
