Abstract

This thesis deals with studying the word formation of the English names of drinks and food in restaurants and cafes in Padang city. The aims of the study are to explain the type of word formation process of the English language used to name drinks and food and determine the major type of the process. The source of data for this study is lists of menus used in six restaurants and six cafes in Padang City which are chosen from six sub-districts. The data is all names of food and drinks written in the English language. The analysis of the types of word formation process refers to Yule's (2010) theory. The results of the analysis reveal that there are 27 names of drinks and food that are formed in different ways. They can be categorized into three main types of word formation processes: compounding, blending, and borrowing. Borrowing appears to be the common trend in the formation of words for drinks and food name. They are formed by taking terms from another language. This indicates that borrowing is a type of word formation that gives more chance for people to create new words. This fact enables the owner of the restaurants and cafes creatively form new words to attract customers.
