Abstract

This study is about form, types, and reasons for code-mixing, as found in the writings on shirts produced by three startup companies in West Sumatra. This qualitative descriptive study uses data from of all writings containing English words or phrases on all shirts produced by the three startup companies. The form of code-mixing is identified by referring to Kolln & Funk’s (2012) classification, the types to Muysken’s (2000), and the reason to Hoffman’s ( 2014). The results of the data analysis showed that in the form-based classification, 80 data were found, and most of them did code mixing in word form. In the classification based on type, 103 data were found. In the classification based on reason, there were 85 data. As for the reasons for code-mixing, only five are included in Hoffman’s (2014) Category: talking about a particular topic, showing empathy about something, repetition used for clarification, expressing group identity, and clarifying the speech content to the interlocutor.
