Abstract

Proverbs can be said to have perfect linguistic makeups. They are well-formed and read well. It is part of the reason why translating proverbs are challenging. This study aims to analyse and identify the types of equivalence in translating a number of Indonesian proverbs into English. First, this study will look at the types of proverbs taken from a collection of Indonesian proverbs. The collected Indonesian proverbs were then translated into English via Google Translate. This research uses a qualitative method. To this end, this research used Nida and Taber’s theory (1982) to identify the types of equivalence after comparing the original and translated proverbs. This study analysed 40 proverbs (data). It was found that most of the Indonesian proverbs were of formal equivalence in the corresponding English translations. To be more exact, the results show that 30 data are of formal equivalence, while seven are of dynamic equivalence. Three proverbs do not belong to either of the equivalence type In general, it can be concluded that Google Translate tends to translate literally or maintains the formal properties of the original proverbs. This is not surprising as that is the quality that differentiates Google Translates from human translators.
