Abstract

This research discusses the use of English address terms in a TV show entitled Graham Norton Show Season 13 Episode 11. The goals of this research are to discover the forms, syntactic positions, and functions of English address terms in Graham Norton Show Season 13 Episode 11. The data for this study were gathered by transcribing the conversation from the selected video and then identifying, categorizing, and describing the address terms found in the video. An orthographic transcription technique was used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using Wardhaugh’s theory (2006) for the forms of English address terms. The theory of Antonova (et al, 2020) was used to identify the syntactic position of the address terms. Then, Wood & Kroger’s theory (1991) was used to identify the function of English address terms. The result shows that there are 66 English address terms found in the Graham Norton Show Season 13 Episode 11. There are six forms of address terms, and the most dominant form used in this episode of the show is first name. This form of address term is commonly found in the beginning position of an utterance. The address term first name in the beginning position functions to open a conversation and identifies the person being addressed to become the collocutor.
