Abstract

Tillage is soil manipulation carried out to prepare land for crop growth. This study was aimed to determine the effect of several tillage techniques and the mulch derived from sweet corn residues on soil water retention as well as on growth and yield of sweet corn at Inceptisols. The experiment was carried out in the Korong Gadang Village, Padang City and soil analysis at the Soil Laboratory, Andalas University. The experiment had 4 treatments (conventional tillage (OTK), no tillage (TOT), minimum tillage (OTM) and minimum tillage with mulch from sweet corn residues (OTM+J)), with 3 rephicates. Parameters analyzed were organic matter, soil bulk density, total soil pore, permeability, aggregate stability, and soil water retention. The results showed that various tillage techniques had significant effect on organic matter, soil bulk density, permeability, and soil aggregate stability.While total soil pore and water retention in the soil increase from OTK, to OTM, to TOT and to OTM+J. Minimum tillage with mulch from sweet corn residues was considered as the best treatment. It gave the higghest water retention at pF 2.54 (44.99%) and available water pore (24.65%), and the highest yield (250.20 g/plant) of sweet corn.
