Abstract

Cocoa is one of Indonesia’s leading estate crop export commodities with great potential. This is supported by the world’s cocoa situation which has experienced a deficit in recent years. In addition, Indonesia has targeted to become the largest cocoa bean producing country in the world because it is estimated that Indonesia’s total cocoa land area reaches 1.35 million hectares and is capable in producing 1.3 million tonnes/year of cocoa beans in 2025. The success in utilizing the existing potential as well as efforts to realize the target that have been set depend on the performance of the domestic cocoa export industry itself, so that further study on how the domestic cocoa export industry has worked so far, what influences it, and what its future prospects will be like, is important to be carried out. This study aims to examine and dissect the domestic cocoa export industry using a business analytics model, so that the existing potential can be optimally utilized. The deepening of the domestic cocoa export industry requires business analytics model to turn data into information for better business decision making. In this study, the implementation of business analytics model focuses on performance analysis, factor analysis, and prospect analysis. Respectively, each analysis carried out refers to the stages in the business analytics model: descriptive analytics (using descriptive statistical method), diagnostic analytics (using correlation method), and predictive analytics (using backpropagation neural network method). The results of performance analysis state that the domestic cocoa export value in general shows performance that needs to be more improved because there has been a downward trend by 27% over the last ten years. The results of factor analysis state that the factors that positively and significantly affect the domestic cocoa export value are export volume and world cocoa prices. Meanwhile, the results of prospect analysis state that the downward trend in the domestic cocoa export value will still occur until 2022. The implementation of business analytic model in this study is expected to assist the government in making data-driven decisions so that it can produce strategic and effective plans to achieve business goals.
