Abstract

This is a research about the technique, the method, and the translation ideology of the novel “The Old Man and the Sea” written by Ernest Hemingway that is translated by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Dian Vita Ellyati. The aims of this research is to identify the translation ideology of the translators in translating the text. The method applied in the research is descriptive qualitative. The sources of the data in this research are the English version of The Old Man and the Sea, and two translated versions by Dian Vita Ellyati and Sapardi Djoko Damono. Then, the techniques applied from the data are identified. From the identified techniques can be identified the method of translation and the translation ideology. The result of this research shows that in in Dian Vita Ellyati there are ten translation techniques from 49 sentences. They are transposition 28 data, amplification 22 data, literal 20 data, reduction 18 data, variation 10 data, established equivalence 10 data, borrowing 7 data, description 7 data, compensation 4 data, and generalization 2 data. The method of translation used by Dian Vita Ellyati is Communicative translation and the ideology of translation is Domestication. Then, in Sapardi Djoko Damono there are eleven translation techniques from 49 sentences. They are literal translation 34 data, amplification 16 data, transposition 10 data, established equivalence 5 data, particularization 2 data, compensation 2 data, borrowing 1 data, description 1 data, modulation 1 data, and variation 1 data. The method of the translation used by Sapardi Djoko Damono is Literal translation and the translation ideology of Sapardi Djoko Damono is Foreignization.
