Abstract

Three suicide letters written by the perpetrators of bomb attacks, Dr. Azahari, Dian Yulia Novi, and Lukman Alfariz, were analyzed in this study. Systemic Functional Linguistics theory especially about transitivity proposed by Halliday is used to see the ideational meaning of all the letters to reveal the perpetrators’ construal of related reality by identifying the elements of the clauses. To analyze the text based on the theory of transitivity, the text is divided into clauses based on the type of process, then each element of the existing processes, participants, and circumstantial elements is calculated. By applying the transitivity system theory, the bombers’ experiential meaning in the discourses they left before committing their crimes can be seen. The results show that from a total of 72 clauses, there are 64 process types, 100 participant functions, and 47 circumstantial elements. The 15 Processes are contained in Dr. Azahari’s letter, 24 Processes are in Dian Yulia Novi’s letter, and 25 Processes in Lukman Alfariz’s letter. Based on the transitivity system found, it can be seen that the ideational meaning in the letters written by the bombers are about their feelings, hopes, requests, gratitude and apology.
