Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 or known as HAp is a Calcium Phosphate based biomaterial that is widely used in the medical world, especially as bone implans. The use of hydroxyapatite as a bone replacement biomaterial (bone graft) is due to the similarity in composition to the constituent elements of bone. Although HAp has good biocompatibility and biodegradability, HAp still has poor mechanical properties such as brittleness and low flexibility. To overcome these shortcomings, research was carried out to improve the mechanical properties of HAp by synthesizing hydroxyapatite composites with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). PEG is an organic compound that is flexible, easy to stretch and bioinert, so it is safe for used in the medical world. A composite is a combination of 2 or more elements to produce a compound with new characteristics. In this study, HAp was used as a composite matrix and PEG as a filler. HAp was synthesized from blood clam shells (Anadara granosa) using the sol gel method while the HAp-PEG composite was synthesized using the In Situ method with various concentrations of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80%. Based on the results of the Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) characterization of the HAp-PEG composite, it showed the presence of functional groups PO43- and CO23- which indicated the presence of HAp. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction pattern showed the presence of HAp with crystal size of 24,194 nm. The results of the Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM EDX) analysis showed that the morphology of the HAp-PEG composite had HAp crystals in the form of needles and a Ca/P ratio of 1,87. Analysis of the DTA results showed tha there was weight loss of 60,610% in the composite at temperature >200ºC. Degradation test was also carried out to see the percentage of the ability of the HAp-PEG composite to be degraded, and the results showed that the composites degradated optimally at a concentration of 70%.
