Abstract

Politeness is a fundamental thing in communication. Some people consider politeness for the purpose of maintaining and achieving a smooth communication with other people. Therefore, every person has to understand the importance of politeness in communication. This research aims to analyze the use of politeness markers of written English in the user’s posts on LinkedIn. The data of the research are obtained from the 18 posts published by personal and official accounts in 2021. The posts contain information about works, experiences, job vacancies, and promotions. In this study, the data are collected by using a nonparticipant observation method and taking screenshots of the posts by using a smartphone. Moreover, the data are analyzed by using the theory of politeness by Brown and Levinson (1987) and pragmatic identity method. The results of the research are presented descriptively and using tables. The research findings show that there are 11 types of politeness markers used by personal accounts in total in which thank you markers become the dominant type used in the user’s posts. Besides, there are also 11 types of politeness markers found in the posts of official accounts in which imperative markers are mostly used in those accounts. Furthermore, the results also show that personal accounts tend to use politeness markers that are formal, soft, and indirect when delivering the information in the posts, whereas official accounts mostly use politeness markers that are direct, simple, and clear. Those circumstances can be seen from the types of politeness markers used by those accounts. The factors influencing the choice of politeness markers used in the user’s posts of personal and official accounts consist of the payoffs (the consideration for the benefits of minimizing the face-threatening acts and not doing the face threatening acts) and sociological factors (the social distance, the relative power, and the ranking of impositions).
