Abstract
This thesis examines the parental involvement in developing children in Roald Dahl's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The purpose of this study is to analyze the motives of parenting styles in the development of children. The movement of parenting styles consists of background, social life, and personal desires that derive from the parents' behaviors and impact the child's personality. This study also aims to discover the unconscious motive of parents' parenting movements toward the children and their surroundings. The research is then analyzed using Diana Baumrind's The Theory of Parenting, and supported by psychoanalytic approach based on Sigmund Freud's The Unconscious. The study result; there are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles. The parenting movement influences the unconscious motives, discipline, habits of the children.
