Abstract

Abstract This thesis discusses the types of illocutionary acts found in Taylor Swifts utterance atThe Ellen DeGeneres Show. This study aims to discover what types of illocutionary acts are used by Taylor Swift during her conversation with Ellen and what types of speech acts used by Taylor Swift to deliver her intention in the conversation. The data in this research is obtained from a video interview between Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres uploaded on Youtube in 2019. This research uses a qualitative method where the results of the analysis are described in written form in one of the subchapters. The theory used to analyze the data from this research is the theory of the types of illocutionary acts proposed by John R. Searle (1979, p.12), and the theory of direct and indirect speech acts by Yule (1996, p.55). The research found that there are 4 (four) types of illocutionary acts used by Taylor Swift during her interview with Ellen namely assertives (44), directives (8), expressives (7), and commissives (2). Assertives is the type of illocutionary acts that Taylor Swift uses the most often. On the other hand, there is no declaration type found in Taylor Swifts utterance. Furthermore, direct speech acts is dominantly used by Taylor Swift in delivering the meaning of her utterance. Keywords: talkshow, illocutionary acts, speech acts
