Abstract

Nurse is one of human resources which is very important in giving health services in hospital. In giving health services, a nurse has tasks with high demand that will make a nurse feel oppressed, that cause stress. Someone who undergoes stress will do a way to handle the situation which is being experienced is called coping. Eisenberg and Damon (1998) said that coping for stress was one of the factors that influence the ability of emphaty. This research is aimed for analyzing the influence of coping stress to the ability of nurses empathy in Instalation of Hospitalization in Regional Public Hospital of Dr. Achmad Muchtar in Bukittinggi . This research is based on theory of coping stress and ability of emphaty. Population for this research consist of nurses in Instalation of Hospitalization in Regional Public Hospital of Dr. Achmad Muchtar, Bukittinggi. There are 147 people that used for samples in this research and the method used is disproportionate stratified random sampling. Data accumulation is worked by using scale The Brief COPE from Carver (1997) to quantify coping and Interpersonal Reactivity index from Davis (1980) to quantify emphaty where each scale has big reliability in the amount of 0,934 and 0,913. The result of the research indicates that hypothesis is acceptable. The result of the research shows that there is a significant influence between coping stress to ability of nurses emphaty in Instalation of Hospitalization in Regional Public Hospital of Dr. Achmad Mochtar in Bukittinggi. This is proven by experiment F where the significance grade is 0,000. The coefficient of determination that indicated by Adjusted R Square is 0,581 which it means the contribution of influence of coping stress to ability of nurses empathy in Instalation of Hospitalization in Regional Public Hospital of Dr. Achmad Mochtar in Bukittinggi is 58,1% and the rest is 41,9% determined by another variable that can not be explained in this research.
