Abstract

Sambung nyawa (Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr.) is a traditional medicinal plant originating from Burma and Cina. This species is easy to find in Indonesia, especially in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Jawa. This plant is efficacious for treating strep throat, tonsils, diabetes, hypertension, liver, hemorrhoids, ulcers, tumors, diabetes, swelling, dysentery, and stopping bleeding. In addition, this plant has antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anticoagulant, and antitumor activities. In this study, the secondary metabolite content of sambung nyawa leaf extract and its toxicity activity was tested. The extraction process was carried out by multilevel maceration using 3 different solvents, starting with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. Secondary metabolite content test results showed that ironwood leaves contain flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, triterpenoids, and alkaloids. The toxicity test using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method on Artemia salina Leach shrimp larvae showed that the three leaf extracts were classified as toxic compounds with LC50 values of hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts were 469,1373; 49,0577; and 242,4288 mg/L.
