Abstract

This investigation was performed in Padang, Indonesia, a region prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. With the large earthquake that occurred in 2009 and the constant information on the dangers of an earthquake followed by a Tsunami, researchers suspect that the threat and potential for disasters cause changes in workforce behavior; therefore, this research examines the condition of the workforce through QWL. In addition, it is believed that the severity of earthquakes and disasterprone situations might reduce labor productivity in terms of working hours, particularly for coastal employees. Consequently, changes in productivity levels also impact salaries. This research utilizes work dimension variables (work stress, social support, job features, and physical work environment), human capital (education and work experience), and the geographic location of the workplace to examine the relationships between these factors (altitude and distance from the location to the coastline). Padang's workforce is analyzed. Krejcie and Morgan's table determines sample size. 384 BPS job categories are sampled. Probability Sample utilizing a proportional stratified random sampling strategy and Area Sampling based on a BNPB and Padang city government evacuation map. The analytical methodology uses a system of simultaneous equations and STATA's three-stage lease square (3SLS) estimating method to reduce form equations. According to the study findings derived from the reduced form equation, geographical location, education, job experience, physical work environment, and social support have a considerable beneficial effect on worklife quality. In contrast, job stress has a negative impact on the quality of work life. Next, education, work experience, physical work environment, and job qualities have a large positive influence on wages, however geography has a considerable negative effect on wages. In addition, geographical location, education, the physical work environment, and job characteristics have a considerable beneficial influence on productivity, whereas work stress has a large negative effect. This research gives managerial implications for employees, governments, and organizations in developing disaster-prone work environment regulations.
