Abstract

Lung damage facilitates the colonization of pathogenic bacteria in lower respiratory tract COPD patients that induces inflammation which will become exacerbation, thus contributing to the progression of obstruction which is associated with increased levels of IL8 and number of bacterial colonization in respiratory trac. This study aims to determine the relationship between levels of IL8 sputum with bacterial colonization of the lower respiratory tract and lung function in stable COPD patients. Cross sectional study; the subjects were stable COPD patients based on GOLD 2013. Sputum was collected by spontaneously or induction by using hypertonic saline 3% inhalation. Interleukin 8 in sputum was assest with ELISA. Microbiology test was perform to identify potential pathogen microorganism (PPM) using microbat technique and count the bacterial load present in coloni forming units per mili liter (CFU/ml). Fifty two patients all of them were male, the average of age was (67,98±7,18), most of them grade III COPD (55,77%). Mean of IL 8 was 656,42 pg/ml, microbiology test found out 65,40% patient had PPM, which was most common Ps. aeruginosa (38,24%). There were association between level of IL 8 and bacterial pattern (p=0,02), IL 8 level had not association with number of bacterial load (p= 0,78) and grade of COPD( p=0,92). There was assosiation between IL 8 level with bacterial pattern but no assosiation with number of bacterial load and grade of COPD . Colonization of PPM in lower respiratory tract was found in more than a half of severe COPD. Keyword: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Interleukin 8, potential pathogen microorganism, bacterial load.
