Abstract
ABSTRACT CHINESE ETHNIC IN THE LAND OF MALAY (Study of Phenomenology of Intercultural Communication Between Chinese Ethnic and Rengat Malay Local Ethnic) By: Fahreza Rama Aditya 1610863006 Supervisor: Dr. Sarmiati, S. Sos, M. Si Rinaldi, S. Sos, M. Ikom Ethnic Chinese in Rengat city often get discrimination and assume as not they deserve. The appearance of ethnic Chinese in Rengat city is no longer something new, the existence of Chinese villages have proven that ethnic Chinese had a long history. The form of problem from this research is intercultural communication that is experienced by ethnic Chinese living in Rengat as Malay land. Otherwise the purpose of this research is to know intercultural communications between ethnic Chinese and ethnic Malay, also to describe the point of view of each ethnic with each other. This study uses qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The data collection process is done by depth interview and direct observation. Theory that is used in this study is Theory of Assimilation by Robert Park, this theory explains how assimilation happens between different ethnicities but must live in the same environment. Other than theory of assimilation, this study helped and supported with using several concepts like intercultural communication, stereotypes and prejudice, mixed culture to situational ethnic concepts. The result of this study shows that during interaction, the language that is commonly used is Malay language, so in this study if ethnic Chinese are doing interactions or communications with ethnic Malay then they have to adapt by using Malay language. Even living side by side, ethnic Chinese and ethnic Malay are really different from each other both in terms of culture or perspective. Ethnic Chinese cannot be equated with other ethnic groups from nusantara, but as as Malays and as the majority etnhnic group we should embrace the Chinese ethnic as a friends even become a family.
