Abstract

Laundry wastewater contains phosphate which has the potential to cause water pollution if it is not treated before being discharged into receiving water bodies. In this study, modification of the coconut coir adsorbent was carried out to increase its capability in phosphate removal from laundry wastewater. Modifications were performed physically by heating at temperatures of 300ºC, 450ºC and 600ºC and chemically by immersion in acid solution (HCl 0.5 N) and base solution (NaOH 0.5 N). The adsorption process was carried out in batch system at optimum conditions (120 minute of contact time, <0.106 mm of adsorbent diameter and 2 g/L of adsorbent dose) on laundry wastewater with initial phosphate concentrations ranging from 22.42 to 34.83 mg/L. The phosphate concentration was analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 880 nm. From the results of the study, the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of phosphate using coconut coir without modification was 24.42-32.42% and 2.74-5.65 mg/g. Meanwhile, using physically modified coconut coir by heating at temperatures of 300ºC, 450ºC and 600ºC, the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity were 73.06-77.77% and 8.19-13.55 mg/g; 62.10-71.13% and 6.96-12.39 mg/g, and 52.98-67.85% and 5.94-11.82 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiency and adsorption capacity using chemically modified coconut coir by immersion in HCl 0.5 N and NaOH 0.5 N were 85.55-88.95% and 9.59-15.49 mg/g; 85.98-89.51% and 9.64-15.59 mg/g, respectively. The results show an increase in the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of phosphate using a modified coconut coir adsorbent. Based on the FTIR analysis and ANOVA test, it was found that there were differences in the functional groups of coconut coir without and with modifications resulting in significant differences in the removal efficiency and phosphate adsorption capacity. The best modification was chemical modification by immersion in NaOH 0.5 N. The experimental data fitted well to Freundlich’s adsorption isotherm.
