Abstract
STUDY ON CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL AFTER FOREST FIRE IN 2019, IN PALUPUH, AGAM REGENCY ABSTRACT Forest fires in Palupuh, Agam Regency burnt for totally 4 Ha land (3 Ha in August 2019, 0.5 Ha in December 2019 and 0.5 Ha in January 2020). The fire was caused by local community activity to open agricultural land. However, until 2021 there was only 0.5 Ha land (burnt in December 2019) that was managed for fragrant lemongrass cultivation. The purpose of this research was to asses the chemical properties of soil after forest fires in Palupuh, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. The study was conducted from March to November 2021. It was conducted by survey method, and soil was sampled based on purposive sampling at 3 different dates of forest fire (August 2019, December 2019 and January 2021) at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm soil depths. Soil chemical analysis was conducted at the Soil Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, Padang. The parameters analyzed consisted of pH (H2O and KCl 1:2), organic-C, CEC, P- available, total-P, total-N, basic cations, and base saturation. Data resulted from the analysis were compared to the criteria of the soil chemical characteristics. From the results of the study, it could be concluded that forest fires reduced soil fertility. The decrease was identified for soil pH H2O (0.95 and 0.77), pH KCl (0.16 and 0.11), organic-C (0.67% and 0.57%), CEC (2.48 cmol/kg and 2.57 cmol/kg), P-available (3.93 cmol/kg and 3.47 cmol/kg), total-P (37.4% and 34.3%), total-N (0.03% and 0.03%), basic cations (2.69- 0.05 cmol/kg and 1.53- 0.05 cmol/kg), base saturation (51.3% and 26.6%) at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm soil depths, respectively. Keywords: After forest fires, Soil fertility, The chemical nature of soil
